چکیده

We analyse the consequences of the recently measured parallax of SSCygni (Harrison et al. 1999) on the accretion disc limit cycle model. Using the observed long term light curve of SSCyg and d = 166± 12pc, we obtain for the mean mass transfer rate Ṁ tr = 4.2± 1.7× 10 g s. In addition, we calculate the vertical structure of the accretion disc taking into account heating of the outer disc by the stream impact. Comparing the mean accretion rate derived from the observations with the calculated critical mass transfer rate, we find that the disc instability model disagrees with the observed long term light curve of SSCyg as Ṁ tr is greater or similar to the critical mass transfer rate. The failure of the model indicated by this result can be confirmed by considering that the accretion rate at the onset of the decline should be exactly equal to the value critical for stability. In contrast to this prediction of the model, we find that the accretion rate required to explain the observed visual magnitude at the onset of the decline must be significantly higher than the critical mass transfer rate. Our results strongly suggest that either the usually assumed temperature dependence of the viscosity parameter α is not a realistic description of the disc viscosity, that the mass transfer rate in SSCyg noticeably increases during the outbursts or, finally, that the HST distance of 166± 12 pc, is too high.

The Distance to the Hyades Cluster Based on HST Fine Guidance Sensor Parallaxes

Trigonometric parallax observations made with the Hubble Space Telescope’s Fine Guidance Sensor #3 (HST FGS) of seven Hyades Cluster members in six fields of view have been analyzed along with their proper motions to determine the distance to the cluster. Knowledge of the Cluster’s convergent point and mean proper motion are critical to the derivation of the distance to the center of the cluste...

P16: Effect of Hesperetin Nanoparticles on Cerebral Gene Expression and Activity of Catalase and Superoxide Dismutase in Alzheimer’s Rat

Hesperetin (Hst) is a well-known bioflavonoid, has low bioavailability. Hesperetin nanoparticles (Nano-Hst) enhance its bioavailability. Nano-Hst were not explored for their potential therapeutic activities in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Hence, the present study was performed to evaluate the protective effect of Nano-Hst in comparison to free Hesperetin on against intracerebroventricular in...

The dwarf nova SS Cygni : what is wrong ?

Context. Since using the Fine Guiding Sensor (FGS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) the distance to SS Cyg has been measured to be 166 ± 12 pc, it became apparent that at this distance the disc instability model fails to explain the absolute magnitude during outburst. It remained, however, an open question whether the model or the distance has to be revised. Recent observations led to a revi...

Astrometry with the Hubble Space Telescope: A Parallax of the Fundamental Distance Calibrator RR

We present absolute parallaxes and relative proper motions for the central stars of the planetary nebulae NGC6853 (The Dumbbell), NGC 7293 (The Helix), Abell 31, and DeHt 5. This paper details our reduction and analysis using DeHt 5 as an example. We obtain these planetary nebula nuclei (PNNi) parallaxes with astrometric data from Fine Guidance Sensors FGS 1R and FGS 3, white-light interferomet...

HST/FGS Observations of the Asteroid (216) Kleopatra

Interferometric observations of asteroid (216) Kleopatra were performed in January 2000 using the Fine Guidance Sensors (FGS) aboard HST. The FGS data obtained clearly suggest that (216) Kleopatra is composed of two lobes in contact, in agreement with the radar data (Ostro et al. 2000, Science 288, 836–839), and provide more precise constraints on the absolute size of this peculiar object. c © ...
